How marathon rookies can get off on right foot

| | |

from MSNBC.com

It's the evening before your first marathon. You've loaded up on spaghetti, drank gallons of water to make sure you're fully hydrated and laid out your new sneakers and running shorts. Inadvertently, you've also set yourself up for an upset stomach, a long night of frequent visits to the bathroom and potentially race-ending blisters and chafing from your stiff gear.

With the Appalachian Trail Behind Him, 73-Year-Old Reston Runner Gets Ready for the Next Race

"You're 73 and you've just run a 50-mile race? Are you putting me on?"

In order, yes and no. I get those questions all the time. Running-wise, I'm what you could call a late bloomer. But I'm making up for lost time. Since I took up running at age 48, I've completed 25 marathons (including seven Marine Corps Marathons) and two 50-mile

Lance Armstrong Learns the Marathon is Tough

| | | |

from about.walking.com

Congratulations to newbie marathoner Lance Armstrong for finishing his first marathon on Sunday. ""For the level of condition that I have now, that was without a doubt the hardest physical thing I have ever done," he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. He finished in seconds under the 3 hour mark, which would have won the Olympic marathon back in the 1800's, so not too shabby.

Running the Digital Marathon

from nytimes.com

FOR Conrad Kiffin, running a marathon is like starring in his own personal video game. Every mile, he sneaks a look at the global positioning system on his wrist to see whether he’s keeping up with an imaginary rabbit going at his target pace.

“If I see the pacer running away from me, I know I have to go harder,” said Mr. Kiffin, 41, a photographer in Manhattan. “It’s very video-gamey. You are competing against a guy who is not even out there.”

VidaOne MySportTraining GPS for Measuring Outdoor Fitness Workouts

| | | |

gps2

I've personally been marathon-training for a few months now and let me tell you, when you start getting to a point where your long runs starts to exceed 10 miles/16 km, you really feel the need to explore new routes; unfortunately, doing so while still being able to easily track your workout progress and overall routine can be a real challenge. I've personally resorted to a specialized fitness watch from Polar, but if you own PocketPC/GPS hardware, MySportTraining can provide a wide range of information for a lot less than those pricey commercialized alternatives. One of its coolest features is the ability to view your routes afterwards via Google Maps.

My name is Gunner, Luc Gunner. I’m a private dick. I specialize in solving cases about races. One of the most compelling and shocking cases I’ve ever worked was the case of this year’s Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon… It all happened one morning when I was in my office trying to decide what adidas went best with my pinstriped tights and double breasted gray running suit.

Brutal "rest" day

| |

After Wednesday's WAY too fast fartlek, I dragged myself around all day yesterday, slumped my way through squash for an hour and then crashed hard. My neck is still screwed up from????

Had a good breakfast this morning and a good hour of squash. Hydrated myself well and thought my little recovery run would be easy peasy. BUT NO. Just as I laced up my shoes, golf-ball-sized hail started crashing down. As I was on a time schedule, it quickly became time to hit the treadmill.

Bonk city. 20 minutes into the thing, my heart rate was way above normal and I was dying. Maybe it was the incline, but even when I backed it down to 1% and slowed way down (4.5 mph), I was struggling. I gave up and went down to a fast walk (4.0) at 25 minutes and ended up only doing a little over 2.25 miles instead of the four I was planning to do.
